Human Experiences of Place
Taught at: Smith College
Program: Landscape Studies
Last taught: Spring 2023
The urgency of the climate crisis calls us to examine how we conceive of our relationship with the world that surrounds us. Starting from this premise, we will examine various frameworks that philosophers, writers, cinematographers, and artists have developed to make sense of their interactions with built and natural landscapes. We will then put these frameworks to the test, using Smith’s campus and Northampton as our laboratory, to understand how we might bring together our individual lived experiences, in all their diversity, as the basis for more sustainable ways of engaging with the landscapes of our host planet.
